City Council, Question 8

Question 8:
The City recently released plans for Bus Rapid Transit and expressed interest in bringing a bike share program to New York City. Do you think these new projects would enhance the city's transportation network? Please explain.
  • Yes, if people thought they could get to their destination faster on the bus than the car many would choose this option. A bike share would also increase the number of people not using cars so I would support this. I would also like car sharing programs like zipcar to expand and would provide incentives for this.

  • Yes, I believe these programs would enhance the city's transportation program by reducing the number of drivers in the case of Bus Rapid Transit and encourage cycling and better health in the case of a bike sharing program. I support these programs and will work to promote them if implemented.

  • I would most certainly look into Bus Rapid Transit, as it would be a way to provide comparable travel times to subways at a fraction of the cost. Creating bus lanes or giving buses the right of way makes a lot of sense, but I would need to see a specific proposal and a study of the impact it would have on traffic conditions in New York. As for a bike share program, I support this wholeheartedly. Along with my advocacy of creating bike lanes, I think a bike share program, which has been instituted successfully throughout Europe, would be a fantastic way to encourage both recreational biking and less driving. I would be slightly concerned about the maintenance of the bikes and how to ensure that they are returned in good condition. However, as someone who has recently experimented with the Velib system in Paris, I am confident that this issue can be addressed through a refundable deposit or the use of smart cards.

  • I would support bringing a bike share program to New York City. As TA and the NYC Bike Share Coalition accurately point out, “NYC is perfect for bike share because it has a rapidly expanding on-street bike network, the density and mixed land use necessary to generate sufficient ridership and relatively flat terrain.” I also would support the BRT features for implementation in NYC including more frequent service, bus bulbs which bring sidewalks out on land so buses do not have to maneuver into and out of bus stops, longer bus stops to eliminate delays as buses wait to enter. Another great idea is the low floor buses that can speed boarding and exiting and encourage people to exit through the rear door and pre-boarding fair payment.

  • I support Bus Rapid Transit as it would improve public transportation and increase safety measures on our roads. I also support bringing a bike share program to New York City, as we are seeing the program being implemented in other major cities like Seattle and Boston.

  • Bike Sharing programs are a great way to reduce energy consumption by our mass transit systems, air pollution produced by vehicles and address one of our city's growing health problems in the rise in obesity among New Yorkers in impoverished areas. A Bus Rapid Transit system presents the possibility of providing more passenger miles with the same number of vehicles and personnel. Both ideas are essential to explore when our city has to make tough decisions on how to improve service with a contraction in our revenue. While consultation between the DOT and local community board planners will have to work on how to sow them into our existing road and street layouts, the long term saving of resources afforded by both suggestions can go to address any future issues that might occur. • I think Bus Rapid Transit is a good way to expand mass transit options and decrease travel times. There has to be a good community consultation process in planning the routes to minimize negative impacts on businesses and residents.

As to a bike share program, I think that it is working very well in other cities around the world and I would be interested in finding a way to make it work in the New York City environment. There are challenges and obstacles in terms of siting, financing, operations, and other issues but I think it is a good idea worthy of further exploration, discussion, and testing on a pilot basis.

  • The Bike Share and Bus Rapid Transit programs are examples of pilot programs well worth trying. As City Council Member, I would support these and many other alternatives to promote bicycle transportation.

  • The BRT route on Fordham road seems to be successful and the idea to bring BRT routes to the other boroughs so that they can experience what the Bronx has achieved is an idea that has merit. The 32nd Council District is an area that heavily lacks adequate public transportation and would benefit greatly from a Bus Rapid Transit system.

  • A Bus Rapid Transit plan would be very beneficial to improving transportation throughout New York City. They have been proven to be effective in other major cities and New York City should look into implementing these plans. It is especially important to make sure that Bus Rapid Transit plans are applied to the outer boroughs as each day millions of New Yorkers relay on buses every day for both work and general movement throughout the city. It is very essential that we look into all possible plans to make those commutes easier, more efficient, and quicker.
