City Council, Question 8

Question 8:
The City recently released plans for Bus Rapid Transit and expressed interest in bringing a bike share program to New York City. Do you think these new projects would enhance the city's transportation network? Please explain.
  • Yes every plann that increase people moveing in a safe and faster way is good

  • I believe both new projects will be a great help in improving and modernizing our transportation network. Bus Rapid Transit is an intelligently designed system that will help us to make our bus services more effective and more efficient. It has a proven track record in cities like Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Bogota and will make a difference in New York, where we have the slowest moving bus service in the country. A bike share program, meanwhile, would be an excellent way to encourage New Yorkers to ride bikes as much as possible. As mentioned earlier, I support the expansion of programs such as the Downtown Alliance's summer bike share program.

  • Yes, but for very different reasons. BRT is a super express bus. In places like LA, they have a devoted lane and priority in traffic light patterns so they just zoom along the road. It gets 50 people to their destination faster than a drive in traffic and gets cars off the road so its faster for everyone else as well. I'm not sure what New York has proposed, but this is an excellent small step forward in terms of transportation alternatives. It can help commuters greatly without the significant investment of new rail projects.
BRT is in many ways a better system for outer-borough transit issues; in District 1, it often has as many negatives as positives. The bus bulbs on lower Broadway, for example, have created increased congestion during rush hour, as well as problematic double parking.
A bike share program would be great for New York city, but due to its size and commuting from different boroughs, I imagine it would benefit a very different population than Bus Rapid Transit. You would need a large number of well-located stations to make it a viable reality. Paris has a large one, DC just got one last year, and Montreal has recently developed one- so why not New York?

  • I support Bus Rapid Transit which has been introduced on Fordham Road in my district. I think that a
bike share program is a good idea. I recently passed a law requiring parking lots and garages to accept bicycles.

  • The reduction of personal vehicles will also allow our buses to get to and from their destination on time. It will provide a cleaner and healthier New York.

  • I want a bike share program. The idea is already a huge success in France and is used in Denver and DC. I also understand Seattle is undertaking major steps to make their city a major biking city. I think it is a great idea. My largest concern is that we get it right. Bike lanes must be carved out and we must commit to protect bikers. If we are going to do this we need to make sure that we have the proper safety mechanisms ready for the large volumes of travelers. I truly believe if we were to create a city wide bike share program it could become a major method of transportation for our residents. I look forward to working on this. The rapid bus transit is a good idea. I hope it works, I understand that it is being tested here in the Bronx this summer. My main concern is that we keep those buses affordable for my residents.

  • I believe the residents of my district and our city would gain greater benifit if the current mass transportation systems were designed, adapted and altered to provied universal access to all citizens inclusive of all ages, mobility levels and bicycle friendly. For example, the inclusion of elevators in all subway stations, safe and secure bicycle storage and the connection of all stations to local greenways and safely designed bicycle transport corridors would have a greater impact on our citizens health and improved environmental conditions. If one looks at a city like Amsterdam,(and all cities within the Netherlands for that matter) bicycle transportation is a fundemental design feature in all of their transportation design solutions. This is the comprensensive type of planning and design soultions I feel need to be incorporate into all of our transportatioin proposals city wide.

  • I fully support all transportation initiatives that would reduce congestion traffic and streamline public transportation for New Yorkers. I believe systems like Bus Rapid Transit would be especially beneficial in the outer boroughs were there are few subway lines. A bike share program would also be beneficial not only for enhancing transit alternatives but for improving the public health as well.

  • I support the proposed Bus Rapid Transit systems and will do everything I can to improve and increase the use of the BRT. As stated above, our district is almost solely dependent on express bus service and we are always in jeopardy of losing these services during budget negotiations. THe BRT sysytem combines speed, reliabilty and the specific needs of each community. It will also allow for future permanent shelters that are user friendly safe and accessible to everyone. The routes will provide specific reliable service, will reduce the need for transfers and will work wiht existing local bus service, not supplementing it, to address the critical needs of our residents to use mass transit.

  • The NYC Select Bus Service (SBS) has already undergone several successful pilots on bus lines
such as the Bx12, which saw a 19% reduction in travel time. The initial successes of the SBS
indicates that it should be expanded, particularly to certain busy routes in the Flushing area.
Also, a bike share program would greatly benefit the district, by providing citizens an
inexpensive and healthy alterative to driving. By encouraging citizens to bike, the city will
improve the public health, traffic and the environment.
