AboutTransportation Alternatives was founded in 1973 during the explosion of environmental consciousness that also produced the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Acts and the Environmental Protection Agency. We are a non-profit and non-partisan organization that is supported by 8,000 dues-paying members and public and private grants. Our mission is to reclaim New York City Streets from the automobile, and to advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives. All officially declared candidates running for office in New York City in the 2009 election were invited to participate in T.A.'s candidate survey in July of 2009. Candidates were notified by physical mail, email and with extensive phone call follow ups. The survey deadline was August 12, 2009. All reasonable attempts were made to solicit responses from all interested candidates. Survey questions were written by T.A. staff and were intended to capture candidates' opinions on transportation-focused issues that our members care about.
